Dear Member of Parliament,

The Andrews Government has introduced a Bill to extend Firefighter Cancer Laws to a non-Firefighter group.

The Bill seeks to remove the word “firefighter” in the legislation and replace it with the word “person” – among other concerning changes.

I am asking you to oppose this Bill because the changes the Andrews Government is seeking to make are wrong.

The changes will remove the necessary protections for professional career firefighters who contract cancer, and their families, and they will have a negative effect on firefighter protections in the medium and long term.

I value professional career firefighters. I understand that Firefighters need legislative protections in place for if – or when – they contract cancer.

Firefighter Cancer Laws are unique – only Firefighters face an unavoidable risk of exposure to tens of thousands of toxins and chemicals every time they enter a burning building and only Firefighters forego quantity and quality of life in protecting the community that they serve.

As a Member of Parliament, I am asking for your written response confirming that you will protect Firefighter Cancer Laws and that you will oppose the Bill before Parliament.
